Q & A For Tagliarini Chiropractic of West Hartford, CT

Q:  What is Chiropractic?
A:
Chiropractic locates and removes a severe form of spine & nerve stress, a condition that puts pressure on nerves, unbalances the body, lowers your resistance to disease & weakens you:  The Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

Q:  What does a Chiropractor do?
A:
The doctor of chiropractic analyzes your body for vertebral subluxation using his/her hands & other analysis tools, & then corrects & removes any spinal nerve stress using various spinal adjustment techniques.

Q:  How do we get spinal nerve stress?  (subluxations)?
A:
From stress.  It may occur in infancy from a difficult childbirth or from childhood falls.  Later in life, emotional tension or stress can gradually damage your spine or violent injuries from automobile accidents or sports can suddenly "knock you out of wack."

Q:  Who is affected by subluxations?
A:
Nearly everyone gets spinal nerve stress.  It is a "hidden epidemic" & it is the reason that we all need to have our spines checked for this condition by a doctor of chiropractic every once in a while, just as we get our eyes, teeth & blood pressure checked!

Q:  What can I expect on my first visit?
A:
When you arrive you will be greeted with a smile by our friendly staff.  After completing your new patient paperwork the doctor will begin with your consultation.  During this consultation, Dr. Tagliarini will take a thorough health history in regards to your current complaints as well as past medical history.  Next, Dr. Tagliarini will perform a thorough examination.  This exam includes orthopedic testing, neurological testing, a chiropractic evaluation and X-rays of your spine (if necessary).  The doctor will need a little bit of time to develop your X-rays and correlate all of the information that was gathered in your first visit.  We are very careful in what we do...We do not recommend or perform any treatments until we have had a chance to thoroughly review all of our findings.  Our staff will next schedule you for a Report of Findings for later that day or the next day.  During that report, the Dr. Tagliarini will show you your X-rays, tell you what we found, give recommendations on treatment, and answer any questions you may have.  At that time you will receive your first adjustment.

Q:  What is a typical office visit like?
A:
In a typical office visit, a CA (chiropractic assistant) will bring you into one of our therapy rooms.  You will begin with a therapy called Intersegmental Traction.  During this time, you will lay on your back on our table and an apparatus will comfortably roll up and down your spine exercising the muscles and ligaments between the individual vertebrae and increasing blood flow to your discs.  Next you will get an adjustment which is the main part of your visit and by far the most important part.  At that time, the doctor will bring you in to their office room and have you lay face down on their adjusting table.  Dr. Tagliarini will assess your spine for subluxation and then perform gentle, specific spinal adjustments to correct these subluxations.  Correcting the underlying cause of your symptoms with adjustments eliminates the symptoms and enhances the health potential of your body.

Gentle Chiropractic care is perfect for children Chiropractor Jessica enjoys adjusting childrens spines

Q:  Why should children be checked by a chiropractor for subluxations?
A:
The first subluxation (spinal misalignment) usually occurs at birth…during a normal uncomplicated vaginal birth, 50-90 pounds of pressure are used to pull the baby out of the birth canal.  This number is higher if forceps, vacuum extraction or cesarean are used to aid the delivery.  As kids learn to sit, crawl, stand, walk, ride bikes, play sports etc. they get even more subluxations.  The cumulative effect is the bad backs we have as adults and Chiropractic care prevents these layers of damage.   All kids should have their spines checked for subluxation by a chiropractor.  Pediatricians and school nurses are NOT trained to evaluate for subluxations.  Our children deserve to grow up with healthy spines!

Q:  When was the first chiropractic patient treated?
A:
Modern Chiropractic began in 1895 when Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the first chiropractic "spinal adjustment" on his deaf janitor,Harvey Lillard.  Lillard's hearing returned & Palmer thought he had discovered a cure for deafness.  But as patients with digestive problems, sciatica, menstrual problems, migraine headaches, epilepsy, heart problems, back pain & many other health conditions responded to spinal care, Palmer realized he had discovered something more far-reaching indeed.

Q: Assuming I'm going to take chiropractic treatments, how are they performed?
A:
Chiropractors work with the bones & nerves of the spinal column & spinal cord respectively.  Chiropractors spend years of highly specialized training in order to locate where misplaced spinal vertebrae are impinging the nerves which travel down the spinal cord & out through the spinal column to the muscles, organs & glands of the body.  After locating the vertabrae impinging the nerves (subluxations), the chiropractor, using various highly specialized techniques, is able to re-align the misplaced vertebrae & thus release pressure on the nerves.  This is called a spinal adjustment.

Q:  What are some of the conditions commonly helped by chiropractic?
A:
All kinds of conditions are treated with chiropractic care, such as colds or ear infections, PMS, spinal or disc problems, arthritis, insomnia, stress, vision problems, headaches, allergies, bedwetting, colic, high blood pressure - the list is long!  And yet, please remember, the goal of chiropractic treatment is not the treatment of the disease, but rather the enhancement of health through the reduction of spinal nerve stress.

The above list may seem as long as though chiropractic were a Panacea.  The truth is that most textbooks list over 200 diseases.  Please be mindful of the fact that chiropractic care is not like one drug used for one condition, but on the contrary, it is a complete healing art within itself, concerned with the systems of the body such as nervous, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, elimentory, reproductive, hormonal, musculoskeletal, etc.  & seeks to correct spinal health problems within those systems.

Q:  Can I receive chiropractic treatments if I'm under medical care?
A:
Absolutely.  Having your spinal nerve stress corrected is important no matter what other type of care you're receiving.  You can have your spinal column checked for vertebral subluxations by a doctor of chiropractic & still visit a doctor of homeopathy, naturopathy, osteopathy or medicine.  M.D.'s & other healers cannot tell if you're suffering from spinal nerve stress (vertebral subluxation) & are not trained in correcting it.

Q:  In Chiropractic are there other significant factors besides vertebral adjusting?
A:
Yes, there are five laws to obey for those who desire health & longevity:  1) Proper nutrition; 2) Adequate rest; 3) Moderate exercise; 4) A positive mental attitude; 5) Proper nerve supply.
